Buying a house is a lot like getting married: you're making a massive commitment to remain in a certain state for what feels, at the time, like forever.
Like a marriage, a new house also comes with new requirements for a whole bunch of new stuff. Here is my wish list, mainly for me to get organized over the coming months. But who knows -- maybe I'll decide to register somewhere. Love is in the air!
Cat door
step ladder
back door outside mat
front doormat
magnetic paint
no-kink garden hose
fridge and stove
front-loading energy-efficient washing machine (PG&E rebate $200)
stackable gas dryer (any color)
secure mailbox
Home wiring book
plastic mat for under a desk chair
address labels for new house
outdoor broom and large dustpan
large wrench to turn off gas line in case of earthquake
those little plastic guards to keep water from splashing out of the shower-over-tub
new washers for faucet on pedestal sink
new carpet for front stairs (any color)
tools
place to rent/borrow power tools
circuit breaker panel
potting soil
movers
grout for kitchen sink
automatic garage door opener
insulating blanket for hot water heater
*or* solar hot water heater
8 gallons Kelly Moore paint. Colors: Snippet of Blue (3 gallons latex flat); DIamond white (1g semigloss); Provincial garden (semigloss for bathroom; 1 g); Liquid light (2g; flat); 1g red of some sort
I'm sure the list will get longer...
Next step on home-buying train: debt!
Love to all,
Judy

In memorium: Virginia Carol Kennedy, July 2,2008
I haven't known how to write about this. My sister-in-law of 22 years was murdered in July, and there's still no information about who could have done such a thing, or why.

Going (for) broke
At last, I have news to share. Last week my offer on a house in San Francisco was accepted, and I am now officially "in contract" after having "ratified" the "counter-offer" on Friday. Good times.
If all goes well with the inspections and the loan, I may very well go $1+m into debt this fall. I couldn't be more excited.
With the possibility of home-buying comes austerity measures. I no long eat out, unless someone else is paying. (Thanks, Michael!) I drink only at home. So far, it's a fair amount of beans and pasta, and nice wine. Soon, though, I'll be down to cans of diced chicken and the sake in the back of the cupboard. Just a couple fewer things to move, come November.
The house is a 2+ unit in the inner Sunset district, and it's beautiful. A 1925 Edwardian, my upper unit still has all the period details, including beautiful wood cabinetry, floors with a narrow strip of mahogany inlay, and an arts & crafts style banister. It's a 3-bedroom, so the plan is to get roommates--or the first time in 10 years. My "tenancy-in-common (TIC) partners" will take the lower 2-bedroom and the bonus inlaw unit. Close date is Oct. 30, which means on Oct. 29 all my worldly wealth will be transferred to the bank. Or the title company. Or escrow. I'm not really sure which.
It's been a beautiful Labour Day weekend in Stinson Beach. My dear friends Stacy and Michael invited me to Stacy's step-mom's vacation rental, right on the beach, and the weather's been unusually fine. Nothing like the sand, sun, and surf to take the edge off the end of the fiscal quarter.
